Birthing/After Birth Photography/Baby Love

“Go with the flow and be open minded is the best thing for a photographer, because sometimes things just don’t go according to plan.”

     – Kerri Hamilton

Being my first birthing photography experience, I have to say, it was a challenge.  I was on edge the whole time I was waiting for Momma to go into labor.  I had to be sure I had everything ready to go:  camera gear packed, any props (blankets) packed, both lenses cleaned, the battery and extra battery fully charged,  two empty compact flash cards as I shoot in RAW format, and a really good map showing me how to get to the hospital be it day or night.  All this preparation and little did I know that one night as I shut off my computer to go to bed at midnight that 30 minutes thereafter Daddy would be driving Momma to the hospital.  I didn’t find out till the next morning…. oh well…. bummer.  Did I mention this is my FIRST birth photography session. Another thing that I learned is that it’s very important for your client’s to call you whenever that time comes!!! So I had lots of learning curves with this. But, ya know it’s all good.  It was an experience that I needed to go through to find out what all those birthing photographers go through and I tell ya… they are AWESOME!!!!!  I have more appreciation and respect for birthing photographers than ever.  I couldn’t have experienced it if it wasn’t for the wonderful William’s family.  Thanks ever so much for giving me this opportunity!!!!

I was very happy to learn it’s still not too late to get those first precious moments captured at the hospital after the baby has been born.  So that is exactly what we did.  After birth photography rocked and I loved it so much that I hope to do more in the future!!!! and still hope to do a birthing session too! Everything just fell into place so beautifully and naturally.  There was a huge bay window in their room with some soft cushions that we just used that area for our session.  Here are some images from what was expected to be a birthing session turned out to be a beautiful after birth session.  Those first moments are still as precious as ever.
